Hubert Howe Bancroft letters, 1882-1918, to his family.

Primarily letters to his wife Matilda and his son Griffing, commenting on financial difficulties and the reorganization of The History Company after the 1886 fire, the sale of The Bancroft Library, the development of his farm and other property in San Diego and Griffing Bancroft's management of his business affairs there, his business and property investments in San Francisco, family matters, etc., and advising Griffing on his writing efforts. Included also are some letters written by his wife to him and to their children and a few inter-family letters written by the children; a few letters written to the Bancrofts including one by Porfirio Díaz; notes; clippings, etc.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H.
